Announcement, Dec, 19th 2009….As of today I have retired from tattooing.

ROGER INGERTON

Roger was born in Wellington, New Zealand. Although he did his first tattoo on himself at the age of sixteen, his early working life was as a seafarer and a construction worker.

Between the years of 1972 and 1977 he also studied drawing, painting and print-making at Victoria University, Wellington.

Roger’s Tatooart at 198 Cuba Street, Wellington is probably the longest established Tattoo Studio in New Zealand. And Roger was  one of the most experienced and versatile tattooists .  He has featured in many publications, both in New Zealand and overseas.

Below is a brief time-line of his tattoing career:

  • 1970 – Began professional tattooing with Wally Hammond of Kings Cross, Sydney Australia.
  • 1971 – Opened his own studio at Bondi Beach, Sydney.
  • 1972 – Returned to New Zealand. Worked with Kevin Gray at Studio 144, Vivian Street, Wellington.
  • 1973- Moved to Auckland and worked with Merv O’Connor at Studio 91.
  • 1974- Returned to Wellington and took over Studio 144.
  • 1977 – Established Roger’s TatooArt at present premises, 198 Cuba Street, Wellington.
  • 2009 - After 40 great years, retires from tattooing.
